There’s a moment that happens before you even walk inside Wild Geese Bookshop. It starts on the porch, wide and covered, the kind of space that quietly asks you to slow down before you reach the door. You don’t rush into a place like this. You arrive, whether you meant to or not.
That feeling carries inside with you. The shelves don’t overwhelm or compete for attention, and nothing feels accidental. Each section, from fiction to memoir to cookbooks and craft titles, feels considered, like someone made deliberate choices about what belongs here and trusted that it would be enough.
Where It Started
Wild Geese didn’t begin in a space like this. It started small, tucked into a narrow spot on South Water Street, with books in the front and owner Tiffany Phillips’ law office in the back. Two different kinds of work shared the same footprint, one practical and structured, the other more open-ended and exploratory.
At the time, Franklin didn’t have a bookstore, but filling that gap wasn’t the only goal. Tiffany brought with her a skill set rooted in listening, understanding, and helping people make sense of where they were. When she shifted into bookselling, that instinct didn’t disappear. It simply took a different form, helping people find stories that met them at the right moment.
The Shift
In the beginning, the office and the bookstore coexisted. Over time, though, the balance changed as the shelves expanded and the space began to take on a clearer identity. What started as a shared experiment gradually became something more defined, shaped by what people responded to and what the shop was becoming.
The move to East Madison Street reflects that evolution. With the help of Franklin Heritage, the building was restored into a space that could support what Wild Geese had grown into, with offices upstairs and the bookstore on the first floor. The front porch, now one of its most recognizable features, sets the tone before you even step inside.
A Different Approach to Books
Wild Geese has never tried to compete with scale or convenience. It doesn’t attempt to carry everything, and it doesn’t rely on algorithms to guide decisions. Instead, it offers something quieter and more intentional, built around the idea that discovery still matters.
The selection reflects that mindset. Books are curated rather than stocked, and the mix encourages you to wander instead of search. You might come in with something specific in mind, but more often than not, you leave with something you didn’t expect, chosen not by a system, but by a person.
Community, Not Just Customers
That same philosophy extends beyond the shelves. Wild Geese has become known for its events, many of them hosted nearby at The Historic Artcraft Theatre. Author talks, book discussions, and gatherings bring people together in ways that feel shared rather than transactional.
The range of events reflects how the shop shows up in the community. Larger author nights draw full audiences, while smaller gatherings create space for conversation and connection. Whether it’s a book club, a creative event, or something like Adult Summer Camp, the focus remains the same, creating opportunities for people to engage, not just attend.
Why It Sticks
You can feel the difference in how people move through the space. There’s no urgency, no sense that you need to get in and out quickly. People linger, browse, and take their time, often staying longer than they planned because the environment allows for it.
That’s what makes Wild Geese more than a bookstore. It’s not just about what you buy, but about how you experience being there. Over time, it shifts from a place you visit to a place you return to, not out of necessity, but because it fits into your life in a meaningful way.
